Shopify charges no commission on sales, which is why sellers assume it is cheap and then cannot reconcile the payout. The real cost is the subscription divided by however many orders it produced: $39 across 200 orders is 20 cents an order, and across 20 orders it is $1.95. Add 2.9% plus $0.30 for card processing, plus the 2% surcharge Shopify applies on Basic when payments do not run through Shopify Payments, and a low-volume store can pay more per order than an eBay seller does. This calculator spreads the fixed costs properly.

Worked examples
A $60 order on Basic with Shopify Payments, 200 orders a month
$29.77 net profit
Card processing is $2.04 and the $39 plan works out at $0.20 an order, so Shopify's total is $2.23 — a real rate of 3.72%, less than a third of what eBay charges. After $28 of goods and postage you keep $29.77, and the month comes to $5,953.00.

The plan now costs $1.95 an order and the 2% gateway surcharge adds $1.20, taking Shopify's cut to $5.19 and the real rate to 8.65%. Identical order, $2.96 less profit. Moving to Shopify Payments would recover $1.20 of that immediately.

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?
$3.20 in card processing on Shopify Payments Basic — 2.9% plus $0.30 — and no commission on the sale itself. On top of that sits your share of the monthly plan, which is what the order count above decides: $0.20 at 200 orders a month, $1.95 at 20. Use an outside gateway on Basic and Shopify adds 2%, taking the total to $5.20.
How much do Shopify fees cost?
Basic is $39 a month plus 2.9% and $0.30 per online transaction. Grow and Advanced cost more monthly and process cards more cheaply, so the crossover depends entirely on volume. Apps are the line most stores underestimate — a handful of $15-a-month subscriptions can exceed the plan itself, which is why the monthly input here covers both.
Is it cheaper to sell on Etsy or Shopify?
Shopify, once you clear somewhere between 10 and 30 orders a month depending on basket size. Etsy takes about 9.5% plus $0.45 of every order forever; Shopify takes 2.9% plus $0.30 and a fixed monthly cost that gets cheaper per order as you grow. On a $60 basket the crossover is around 10 orders; on a $20 basket it is nearer 27. Etsy also brings its own traffic, which Shopify does not.
Why are Shopify fees so high?
Usually because the monthly cost is being spread across too few orders, or because payments are running through an outside gateway and picking up the 2% surcharge on Basic. Both show up separately above. If the real fee rate is over 5%, check the order count first — the card processing rate is rarely the problem.
