Shopify bills you twice and only one of the charges is obvious. Shopify Payments takes 2.9% plus $0.30 from every order, which most sellers do remember, and the plan takes a fixed sum every month whether you sell one order or a thousand, which most sellers leave out of their margin entirely. Amortised over 150 orders a $39 plan is 26 cents; over 12 orders it is $3.25, and on a $49 product that swing is six points of margin. This calculator divides the subscription across your real order volume and shows the per-order and per-month figures together.
Compare: Etsy vs Shopify fees
How it's calculated
Profit per order = price − product cost − fulfilment − (price × processing rate + $0.30) − (monthly plan ÷ orders per month)

Worked examples
A $49 product at 150 orders a month
47.0% net margin
Processing is $1.72 and the plan adds 26 cents, so Shopify takes $1.98 of the $49. After $18 of product and $6 of fulfilment, $23.02 is left per order and $3,452.85 for the month. This figure is before advertising — if it costs $9 to acquire an order, put that in the product cost field and the margin falls to about 28%.

The same product at 12 orders a month
40.9% net margin
Nothing about the product changed. The plan is now $3.25 an order rather than 26 cents, and it costs six points of margin — more than the payment processing does. At this volume the subscription is your largest Shopify fee, and the month clears $240.35 in total.

Questions sellers ask
How much does Shopify take from a $20 sale?
Shopify Payments takes 2.9% plus $0.30, so $0.88 on a $20 order. The subscription is on top: at 100 orders a month a $39 Basic plan adds $0.39 per order, bringing the real total to $1.27, or 6.4% of the sale. Using an outside gateway instead of Shopify Payments adds a third-party transaction fee on every order, which is usually the more expensive option.
Is a 50% profit margin too much?
Not on a direct-to-consumer store, where 50% gross is close to the minimum that survives paid acquisition. Once ads, returns and discount codes come out of it, a 50% starting margin often nets under 15%. The figure worth watching is what is left after cost per acquired order, not the headline number on the product page.
Can you make 10k a month on Shopify?
It is a volume question, not a store question. At $23 of profit per order you need roughly 435 orders a month to clear $10,000; at $5 of profit you need 2,000. Set your realistic order count in this calculator and read the monthly profit line — that is the honest version of the target, and it usually shows that the profit per order matters more than the traffic.
What is a 30% margin on $100?
A 30% margin on a $100 sale is $30 of profit, meaning $70 of total cost. On Shopify, $3.20 of that $70 is payment processing before you have bought anything, and the plan share comes on top. Sellers who price to a 30% margin on product cost alone are usually landing nearer 25% once the two Shopify charges are counted.
