Etsy vs Shopify fees come down to volume. Etsy charges a percentage of every sale and nothing monthly; Shopify charges less per sale but adds a plan fee. At 200 orders a month a $50 order costs $1.95 on Shopify against $5.20 on Etsy, but at 10 orders a month Shopify's cost per order rises to $5.65.

How the two charge
Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee, 3% plus 25¢ for payment processing and a 20¢ listing fee per sale. Shopify Payments on the Basic plan charges 2.9% plus 30¢, and the plan itself costs $39 a month (less if paid annually), before apps. The table above spreads that plan across 200 orders a month.

What Etsy's fee buys you
Etsy brings the buyers. A Shopify store has none until you find them, and advertising is the usual answer, which is a cost that sits outside this table. Is it cheaper to sell on Shopify than Etsy?
Per order, once you have volume. On a $50 order Shopify becomes cheaper than Etsy from 12 orders a month on the Basic plan. Below that, the monthly plan fee makes Etsy the cheaper place to sell, and Etsy also supplies the buyers.
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
$9.95 with free shipping, a real rate of 9.9%: transaction fee, payment processing and the listing fee. Add 15% if the order came from an Offsite Ad.
How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?
$3.20 in card processing on the Basic plan with Shopify Payments. Spread the $39 plan across 200 orders and the total is $3.39; across 20 orders it is $5.15.
Can I sell on both Etsy and Shopify?
Yes, and many sellers do: Etsy for new customers who search the marketplace, and a Shopify store for repeat buyers, where no marketplace percentage applies. Inventory apps can keep stock counts in sync between the two.
