Enter your numbers
eBay does not take its cut from the item price alone. The final value fee is charged on the total the buyer pays, which means the shipping you collect is taxed at the same rate as the item itself. Add the flat per-order fee, $0.40 on orders over $10 and $0.30 on anything smaller, and the real rate is always a little higher than the headline percentage. This calculator applies the fee the way eBay actually applies it, then subtracts what the item and its postage cost you, so the number you see is what should land in your bank account.

How it's calculated
Net profit = (price + shipping charged) − [(price + shipping charged) × fee rate + per-order fee] − item cost − your shipping, where the per-order fee is $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above

Worked examples
A $100 item with free shipping
$36.00 net profit
eBay takes 13.6% of $100 plus the $0.40 order fee, so $14.00 in total. Take off the $40 you paid for the item and the $10 postage you absorbed by offering free shipping, and $36.00 is left. Your real fee rate is 14.00%, not 13.6%.

The same item with $20 shipping charged separately
$53.28 net profit
The buyer pays $120, so eBay's fee is calculated on $120 and comes to $16.72. You keep the $20 shipping but only spend $10 posting it. Charging shipping separately earned $17.28 more than free shipping did, even though eBay took $2.72 more in fees.

Questions sellers ask
How much does eBay take from a sale?
For most categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total amount the buyer pays, plus a flat $0.40 per order, or $0.30 if the order comes to $10 or less. Because the percentage applies to shipping as well as the item price, the effective rate on a typical sale works out slightly above 13.6%. Some categories are cheaper: trading cards, books, and a handful of others sit lower, and eBay Store subscribers pay reduced rates in many categories.
Is the eBay fee 15%?
Not for most sellers. 15% was closer to the old combined eBay plus PayPal cost before eBay moved to managed payments. Today the standard final value fee is 13.6% plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less) in most categories, with payment processing already included in that figure rather than charged separately by PayPal. A few categories do run higher, so check the rate for what you sell.
How much does eBay take on a $2500 sale?
At the standard 13.6% rate, eBay takes $340.40 on a $2,500 sale: $340 from the percentage plus the $0.40 order fee. If you also charged the buyer for shipping, the fee is calculated on that larger total. In most categories the rate only drops, to 2.35%, on the part of a sale above $7,500, so a $2,500 order pays the full 13.6%. Some categories use their own thresholds, so check your category's rate card.
What is the cheapest way to sell on eBay?
Three things move the number most. An eBay Store subscription cuts the final value fee in most categories and pays for itself somewhere around 25 to 50 listings a month. Charging shipping separately rather than absorbing it usually nets more, as the second worked example above shows. And because the $0.40 per-order fee is flat, combining items into one order for a buyer is cheaper than shipping them as separate sales.
