Sellers price against the final value fee and forget that Promoted Listings takes its cut from the same number. Both the 13.6% fee and whatever ad rate you set are charged on the item price plus the shipping the buyer paid, so a 5% ad rate on a standard category is really 18.6% off the top before the flat per-order fee of $0.40, or $0.30 on orders of $10 or less. This calculator applies both, subtracts the item, the postage and anything else the sale cost you, and shows the break-even price — the lowest you can list at and still come out even.

How it's calculated

Net profit = (price + shipping charged) × (1 − (fee rate + ad rate) ÷ 100) − per-order fee − item cost − your shipping − other costs, where the per-order fee is $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above

LaTeX source \text{Net} = (P + S_b)\left(1 - \frac{r + a}{100}\right) - f - C_i - S_c - C_o, \quad f = \begin{cases} 0.30 & P + S_b \leq 10 \\ 0.40 & P + S_b > 10 \end{cases}

Worked examples

Example 1

A $100 item, free shipping, 2% Promoted Listings

$34.00 net profit

eBay takes $13.60 in final value fee, $0.40 per order and $2.00 in ad fees — $16.00, a real rate of 16.00%. After the $40 item and $10 postage you keep $34.00. Break-even on this listing is $59.72, so there is about $40 of room before the sale costs you money.

Example 2

A $250 item at a 5% ad rate with $2 of supplies

$92.10 net profit

The ad fee alone is $12.50, which is more than the postage. Total eBay charges reach $46.90, or 18.76% of the sale. Net profit is $92.10 on a 36.8% margin, and break-even climbs to $136.86 — the 5% ad rate pushes it up by about $5 against the same listing run at 2%.

Questions sellers ask

How much will eBay take from a $1000 sale?

At the standard 13.6% rate eBay takes $136.40 from a $1,000 sale: $136 on the percentage plus the $0.40 order fee. Run Promoted Listings at 3% and it is $166.40. If you also charged the buyer for shipping, the fee is worked out on that bigger total, so a $1,000 item with $40 shipping is charged on $1,040.

How do I calculate my eBay selling price?

Work backwards from break-even: add up your item cost, postage and per-order fee, then divide by one minus your combined fee and ad rate. A $45 item with $9 postage and the $0.40 order fee at 13.6% plus 2% needs $64.45 to break even, not $54. Add your target margin to that figure rather than to your cost, or the fees eat the margin you thought you were adding.

How much does eBay charge for a $5000 sale?

$680.40 at the standard rate — 13.6% of $5,000 plus the $0.40 order fee. The rate only falls above $7,500: in most categories the part of a sale over that line is charged 2.35%, so a $10,000 sale costs $1,020 + $58.75 + $0.40 = $1,079.15 rather than $1,360.40. A few categories use their own thresholds, so check yours before pricing.

What are the new eBay fees for sellers in 2026?

The figures here are 13.6% plus $0.40 per order for most categories without a Store subscription, or $0.30 per order when the order comes to $10 or less, checked on 2026-09-23. eBay usually adjusts rates in January and sometimes again mid-year, and changes tend to land in specific categories rather than across the board. Promoted Listings rates are set by you, not by eBay, so they do not change with the fee schedule.
