Square has four ways to take a card and three prices for them on the free plan, and the gap between them is wider than the gap between processors. Tapped or dipped on your reader is 2.6% + 15¢. An online checkout or an invoice is 3.3% + 30¢, or 2.9% + 30¢ if you pay for Square Plus or Premium. A card number typed in by hand, or charged to a card on file, is 3.5% + 15¢. On a $40 sale, keying the card rather than dipping it costs $1.55 instead of $1.19 — 30% more in fees for exactly the same money, and across 300 sales a month that is $108 you did not need to spend.
How it's calculated
You receive = amount − (amount × rate + fixed fee). Monthly fees = fee per sale × sales per month

Worked examples
A $40 sale tapped on the reader, 300 sales a month
$38.81 received
Square takes 2.6% of $40, which is $1.04, plus the 15¢ fixed fee — $1.19, just under 3% of the sale. Across 300 sales that is $357 a month in fees and $11,643 net. To net a round $40 you would ring it up at $41.22.

The same $40 sale with the card number typed in
$38.45 received
Keyed entry runs at 3.5% + 15¢, so the fee is $1.55 and the real rate is 3.88%. That is $0.36 more per sale than dipping the card, and $465 a month rather than $357. Square charges more here because a card it never physically saw carries more fraud risk.

Questions sellers ask
How to calculate fees on Square?
Pick the rate for how the card was taken, multiply, then add the fixed fee. In person that is amount × 2.6% + 15¢, so a $40 sale costs $1.19. On the free plan online checkouts and invoices are 3.3% + 30¢, and manually keyed or card-on-file payments are 3.5% + 15¢. The fee comes out before the deposit reaches your bank.
How much does Square charge per $100?
$2.75 on a card tapped or dipped in person, leaving $97.25. The same $100 taken through an online checkout or an invoice costs $3.60 on the free plan, and keyed in by hand $3.65. The spread of 90 cents per $100 is worth paying attention to if you have any choice about how payments are captured.
What are Square's fees for 2026?
On the free plan, 2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ online and for invoices, and 3.5% + 15¢ for manually keyed or card-on-file payments. Square Plus and Premium bring online and invoice payments down to 2.9% + 30¢ in exchange for a monthly fee. Chargebacks, instant transfers and some add-on products are billed separately, so the processing rate is not the whole cost of running on Square.
How to charge 3% fee on Square?
Square has no built-in customer surcharge for card payments in most of the US, so sellers either add a service charge item at the till or raise prices to absorb it. If you do add one, use the gross-up figure above rather than adding a flat 3%, because Square charges its rate on the surcharge as well. Check your state's rules first — several restrict or prohibit card surcharging, and debit surcharging is banned outright.
