Average CPC is the easy half — spend divided by clicks — and it is the half that never tells you whether a bid is too high. A click is worth exactly the target CPA multiplied by the rate at which clicks convert, so at a 3.2% conversion rate and a $45 target CPA a click is worth $1.44 and not a cent more. Bid above that and the keyword loses money at every volume. This calculator reports both numbers and the gap between them.

Worked examples

Example 1

A keyword bidding below its ceiling

$1.25 CPC against a $1.44 ceiling

$640 over 512 clicks is a $1.25 average CPC. A 3.2% conversion rate against a $45 target CPA supports $45 × 0.032 = $1.44 per click, leaving $0.19 of headroom. The implied CPA at the current bid is $1.25 ÷ 0.032 = $39.06, comfortably inside target, so raising the bid to capture more impression share is the right move.

Example 2

A keyword bidding past its ceiling

$2.10 CPC against a $1.20 ceiling

$1,890 over 900 clicks is a $2.10 CPC, but a 2% conversion rate against a $60 target only justifies $1.20. The implied CPA is $2.10 ÷ 0.02 = $105, which is 75% over target, and the bid is $0.90 too high on every click. Cutting the bid or fixing the landing page are the only two levers — nothing about the ad copy closes a gap that size.

Questions sellers ask

How do you calculate CPC?

Divide ad spend by clicks. $640 across 512 clicks is a $1.25 CPC. That is the CPC you paid, which is not the CPC you bid — auctions charge just enough to hold your position, so realised CPC almost always lands below max CPC. To find the bid a keyword can justify, multiply your target CPA by the conversion rate instead.

Is CPC better than CPM?

CPC is safer when you need clicks and CPM is cheaper when your creative earns them. Paying per click caps your downside: a bad ad simply gets no clicks and costs nothing. Paying per thousand impressions rewards a high CTR, because a $20 CPM at a 2% CTR works out to a $1.00 effective CPC while the same CPM at 0.3% costs $6.67. Convert every CPM buy to an effective CPC before comparing.

How is the average CPC calculated?

Total spend divided by total clicks over the period, which weights each click by what it cost — expensive clicks pull the average up more than averaging the individual keyword CPCs would. That is why an account-level average CPC can sit above every keyword's typical cost if one high-price term absorbs most of the budget. Segment by ad group before drawing conclusions from it.

What is the formula for calculating CPA?

CPA = ad spend ÷ conversions, or equivalently CPC ÷ conversion rate when you are working from click data. A $1.25 CPC at a 3.2% conversion rate implies a $39.06 CPA. The second form is the useful one for bidding, because rearranging it gives max CPC = target CPA × conversion rate — the ceiling every keyword bid has to respect.
